More than 83 million Americans care for at least one pet dog, according to the Humane Society of the United States. That’s nearly half–47 percent–of all households. Half of those households own more than one pet. Clearly, having the loving, faithful companionship of a dog is important to us. However, there are times when we can’t be home to feed, let out and otherwise care for our dogs. Vacations, family obligations, overtime and business trips can all take us away from our furry friends. That’s where dog boarding can help.
What is dog boarding?
Pet boarding provides a safe and enjoyable place for your dog to stay when you can’t be at home with them. Such facilities offer care, attention, veterinary services if needed and plenty of space to run and play safely. Dog boarding can be for as little as a half-day or for as long as a week or two.
What to learn more about dog boarding? Below are a few things you may not have know about pet boarding facilities:
- Web cams at pet boarding facilities can let you peek at your furry friend while you are away
- There is no “one size fits all” accommodation at boarding facilities. There are small suite for small dogs and larger suite for larger dog.
- Amenities at bog boarding facilities can include television sets and plush pet beds.
- More than 147,000 Americans work in the pet boarding and grooming industry – Most boarding facilities assign a designated care giver to your dog, someone to look our for him and play with him every day you’re away.
- Most boarding facilities will also groom your dog while he’s staying with them for a modest extra fee.
- Boarding for dogs is no longer limited to veterinary clinics and stand-alone boarding facilities. Hotels, too, are getting into the business. Many high-end hotels in major metro areas offer activities and care for dogs while their owners are away during the day.

What to look for in a dog boarding facility
All dog boarding facilities are not alike. Before you trust your beloved companion to a boarding facility, it’s a good idea to visit (with your dog, if possible.) Some of the things you’ll want to look for include:
- Is it clean? (it goes without saying.)
- Does the facility have ample room to run and play (in a safe, fenced-in area)?
- Is there access to veterinary care (just in case)?
- Are pets who stay required to be current on their vaccinations (helps to protect your dog and other dogs)
- Is there sufficient light and ventilation?
- Does the staff seem friendly and caring? Do they appear to like animals?
- Does your dog feel at home? (Dogs can be a much better judge of these things than humans can.)
Boarding your dog for the day or overnight is a big decision for any pet owner. It’s wise to learn as much as you can before you give someone else the leash.
