vacationing with your dog

For many people, the dog is part of the family, and it would be unthinkable to leave him behind while everyone else went on vacation. Fortunately, there are countless options for vacationing with your dog where you both will have a great time this summer.

State Parks and National Parks

Organize a hiking trip in one of many state parks that allow dogs to enter. You should check restrictions in advance as many national parks only allow pets in developed areas, and then on a leash. However, parks will often allow dogs in their campsites, allowing you to extend a hiking excursion to a full-blown camping trip.

Options

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is located right to the side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With more than 9 million visitors every year, it is the most popular national park in the country. This could be the perfect option if you want to enjoy hiking without needing to camp as there are several pet-friendly hotels in the town. You will also be able to take the Gatlinburg Sky Lift with your dog to reach the top of the mountain. Plus, if you want to visit the shops, you can leave your dog in a pet daycare center where he will receive plenty of attention and play.

Leavenworth, Washington, just outside Seattle, is home to the Iron Goat Trail, which runs along the Great Northern Railway. If you are looking for adventure, you can go tubing along the fast waters of the Wenatchee River with Let’s Go Tubing, a company that welcomes dogs.

Beaches

If sandy shores are what you crave when summer rolls around, you will be pleased to hear that there are plenty of spots perfect for visiting with your pooch. Many places even allow dogs to stroll and swim without a leash.

Options

Sanibel Island, Florida, is famous for its seashells, but it is also ideal for dog owners. Water dogs can swim safely in the gentle waves, while those canines who are not so keen on swimming can amuse themselves chasing crabs.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, allows off-leash dog walks in the early morning and evening. During the day, you can visit Barc Parc, which features a lake just for dogs and separate play areas for large and small dogs; or keep your dog hydrated at the drinking fountain at North-End Dog Park.

Lakes

Another place to enjoy the water while vacationing with your dog is a lake. You will be able to participate in activities including boating, shoreline fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and motor boating. If you want to take a less hands-on approach, consider one of the many charter companies that allow pets on board for their sightseeing tours.

Options

Lake Placid, New York, is situated high in the Adirondacks and, with a three-mile hiking trail around Mirror Lake to a doggie beach, it is an ideal place for traveling with dogs.

Branson, Missouri, features several lakes and hiking trails in Table Rock State Park. If you are looking for something different to do with your dog, consider getting a Wild West picture at Buster Old Time Photos.

Vineyards and Breweries

Vineyards across the country — from Virginia to Florida, Missouri to Michigan — represent another exciting option for vacationing with your dog. In addition, if beer is more to your taste, there are plenty of breweries that invite dogs along on their tours.

Options

Sonoma Valley, California, is famous for its rolling vineyards, but it is less well known that the area is also home to over 50 dog-friendly establishments. Plus, it does not end there — after a day of touring and tasting wines, you can enjoy a meal with your pouch in one of the many restaurants that offer dog seating outside, including some that even have their own doggy menu.

Fort Collins, Colorado, is home to a number of breweries, of which many allow dogs on their patios while owners sample craft beers. Some breweries go a step further and even allow dogs to enter their tasting rooms.

Urban Adventures

Big cities are often the most pet-friendly vacation spots of all, with many luxury hotels catering to the needs of your four-legged travel companion through their special treatments. Standard hotels, too, often allow dogs to stay and may provide special meals or give you with recommendations of nearby restaurants and attractions to access with your pet.

Options

You can find things to do with your pet in almost any city ranging from dog parks and guided tours. However, one of the top choices is Austin, Texas, where there are more than 15 off-leash parks and where most stores and restaurants are dog-friendly.

Wherever you live and whatever you want to do this summer, there are plenty of options that will allow your dog to come along and enjoy your vacation with you.
